Research at the University of Delaware
As I have mentioned, I worked hard in graduate school classes and other related activities in the United States while struggling with the challenges of English. However, my primary purpose for coming to the U.S. was to conduct brand-new research on insecticide resistance. To earn a master’s degree from the University of Delaware, I not only had to complete the required coursework but also submit a master’s thesis to the university. The research process for the master’s thesis in the program was likely designed as training for conducting research in the United States. It was a practical program that allowed students to experience every step involved in conducting research there. Since there are likely some differences compared to graduate schools in Japan, I would like to begin by briefly explaining the process of starting research at a graduate school in the United States.

デラウェアでの研究
これまで述べてきたように、アメリカの大学院で、英語のハンディキャップと戦いながら、授業などで一生懸命に勉強をしていましたが、しかしアメリカに渡ってきた一番の目的は、アメリカで新しい殺虫剤抵抗性の研究をするということでした。デラウェア大学で修士号をとるためには、要求されている授業の単位数を取ることも必要でしたが、それとともに修士論文を提出する必要がありました。修士課程での修士論文のための研究のすすめかたは、研究者がアメリカで研究するために踏まなければならないステップを一通り経験させてくれるような、アメリカで研究するための恐らくトレーニングとでもいうべき、実践的なプログラムになっていたのだろうと思います。日本の大学院の場合と恐らく異なるところもあると思いますので、アメリカの大学院で研究を始めるまでのプロセスについて、まず簡単に説明したいと思います。
