Deciding on committee members
I believe I discussed my research interests with my advisor while gradually learning about Colorado potato beetles through her lectures. Based on my research goals and my advisor’s guidance, I approached several professors who I thought would be suitable and asked them to serve as committee members for my master’s thesis. Since I wanted to analyze insecticide resistance using quantitative genetics, I asked a professor in the Department of Entomology who specialized in the physiology and biochemistry of insecticide resistance, as well as a professor from a plant-related department who was conducting research on corn breeding, to serve as committee members for my research. From then until the completion of my master’s thesis, I presented the progress and results of my research at several committee meetings. During each meeting, my advisor and committee members monitored my progress and provided me with valuable advice as I continued my work. I believe this approach is a significant difference from graduate schools in Japan.

副査（コミッティー・メンバー）を決める
指導教官から少しずつコロラドハムシについてレクチャーを受けながら、どのようなことを研究したいのかについて相談をしていったと思います。研究したい内容に従い、指導教官からアドバイスを受けながら、その研究内容に適しているのではないかと思われた何人かの先生のところに、修士論文の副査となってくれるようにお願いにうかがいました。私は、殺虫剤抵抗性を量的遺伝学的に分析したいと思っていたので、殺虫剤抵抗性の生理・生化学を専門にしていた昆虫学科の教授と、トウモロコシの品種改良について研究されていた植物関連の他学科の教授に、私の研究の副査となっていただけるようにお願いにうかがいました。以後修士論文が完成するまでに、途中経過や得られている結果を何度か審査会（コミッティー・ミーティング）において報告しました。その都度、指導教官や副査の先生方には私の研究の進捗状況を把握してもらいつつ、いろいろとアドバイスをいただきながら研究を進めていくことになります。ここらへんは、日本の大学院とは大いに異なっているところなのではないかと思います。
