Getting Approval at the Committee Meeting
After completing my proposal, I submitted it to the committee, which included my advisor and committee members, for approval. During the meeting, each professor asked me many questions. I clearly remember being criticized for the proposal's overly ambitious scope. It was the first research proposal I had ever written, so I was likely trying to include too much. As a graduate student, I did not yet understand how much budget and time would be required to carry out the experiments. Therefore, I think it served as a form of training for conducting research in the United States, where I would collaborate with experts in various fields during my work.

審査会（コミッティー・ミーティング）で承認を得る
プロポーザルを書き上げたら、それを指導教官と副査からなる審査会に諮り、承認を得ます。そのミーティングの際に、それぞれの先生方からいろいろと突っ込まれることになります。私が書いたプロポーザルはちょっと野心的（アンビシャス）すぎるというご批判をいただいた記憶があります。はじめて書いた研究のプロポーザルなので、あれもこれもと欲張っていたのだろうと思います。これこれの実験をするためには、これくらいの予算や時間がかかるということが、大学院生の自分ではまだわかりませんでした。なので、いろいろな分野の専門家とコンタクトを取りながら研究を進めていくという、いわばアメリカで研究を進めるためのトレーニングになっていたのだろうと思います。
