Gathering the necessary materials and equipment
Once the proposal was approved, we needed to gather the materials and equipment required for my research. As a graduate student from Japan with limited English proficiency, I remember relying heavily on my advisor to arrange almost everything. She arranged for a laboratory at another university in the United States to provide Colorado potato beetles, the main experimental material, for my research. My advisor also secured the seed potatoes needed to feed the beetles. I asked my advisor to have three breeding boxes made (mesh-covered wooden cubes with sides measuring 61 cm) large enough to house Colorado potato beetles along with potato plants in pots. In fact, they were handmade by a student assisting her, and I remember being amazed at how well they turned out. With her help, I was able to arrange a location and watering system for the glasshouse where the potatoes would grow, and I was also allowed to use an incubator (constant temperature chamber) in the office to keep the Colorado potato beetles. I was very grateful for her support in many ways.

必要な材料や機材をそろえる
プロポーザルの承認を受けたら、実験に必要な材料や機材をそろえていきます。私は、日本から留学してきた、英語もろくにしゃべることができないただの大学院生だったので、ほとんどすべての材料や機材を、指導教官にお願いして集めてもらったと思います。材料となるコロラドハムシは、アメリカのある大学の研究室から送ってもらうように手配してもらいました。コロラドハムシの餌となるジャガイモの種芋も、指導教官に手配してもらいました。コロラドハムシを、鉢に植えた状態のジャガイモの植物体とともに飼育できるだけの大きさを持つ飼育箱（1辺61㎝の、メッシュ張りの木製の立方体）を、指導教官にお願いして3個も作ってもらいました。実際には、先生の助手をしていた学生がハンドメイドで作ってくれたのですが、とても素晴らしい出来だったので、すごいなあと驚いた記憶があります。あと、ジャガイモを育てるための温室の場所や水やりについて取り決めなければならなかったり、コロラドハムシを維持するためのインキュベーター（恒温器）を使わせてもらったりと、いろいろとお世話になりました。
