Colorado potato beetles
I enrolled in the graduate school at the University of Delaware to overcome the limitations I encountered in insecticide resistance research during my time at Chiba University and to approach the topic from a new perspective. I was assigned to the laboratory of a professor conducting research on controlling Colorado potato beetles, so I decided to use Colorado potato beetles as the focus of my resistance research. In Japanese, Colorado potato beetles are called "Kororado-hamushi." As their name suggests, they belong to the order Coleoptera (beetles) and are a major pest that damages potato crops in the United States and other regions. From juveniles that hatch from eggs to fully grown adults, they feed extensively on potato leaves. This insect also has a high reproductive rate, which leads to significant damage to potato plants. However, when I was conducting research in the United States, the control of Colorado potato beetles relied heavily on insecticides, and insecticide resistance posed a major challenge.

コロラドハムシ
千葉大学にいたときに感じてきた抵抗性研究の限界を打ち破り、新たな側面からアプローチしたいと考えて、私はデラウェア大学の大学院にやってきたのでした。大学院で配属されたのは、コロラドハムシの防除を研究されていた教授の研究室でしたので、私の抵抗性研究の材料としてコロラドハムシを用いることになりました。コロラドハムシは英語ではColorado Potato Beetleと呼ばれています。名前にBeetleが含まれていることからもわかるように、甲虫目に属し、アメリカなどにおいてジャガイモを食害する大害虫であり、卵から孵ったばかりの若齢幼虫から成虫に至るまで、ひたすらジャガイモの葉を食害します。繁殖力もかなり高いので被害も大きくなるのですが、私がアメリカで研究していた当時、コロラドハムシの防除は殺虫剤に大きく依存していたため、殺虫剤に対する抵抗性が大きな問題となっていました。
