Maintenance of Colorado potato beetle strains
During my time in the United States, I noticed that Americans eat a lot of potatoes. French fries are commonly served as a side dish with hamburgers. While I ate a lot during my stay, I appreciated the wide variety of dishes on the menu, including baked potatoes topped with various toppings and cheese. Potato chips are also a popular snack, which reinforces my belief that potatoes are an essential part of the American diet. However, the Colorado potato beetle is a significant pest that heavily damages potato crops by eating their leaves. Controlling this pest is a major challenge in the United States and other potato-consuming countries. Therefore, the issue of insecticide resistance—where insecticides become ineffective against the beetle—poses a serious problem.

コロラドハムシの系統維持
私がアメリカに滞在していた時にも感じたのですが、アメリカの人々はジャガイモをとてもよく食べると思います。ハンバーガーのサイドメニューとしてフレンチフライをよく食べるでしょうし、私もアメリカ滞在中によく食べましたが、ベイクド・ポテトといって、ベイクしたポテトにいろいろなトッピングをして、その上にチーズをかけたものなど、メニューはとても豊富でした。もちろんスナック菓子でも、ポテトチップスは好んで食べられているでしょうし、ジャガイモはアメリカ人の食生活にはなくてはならないものなのだろうと思います。コロラドハムシは、そのジャガイモの大害虫です。ジャガイモの葉をほんとうによく食べます。なので、アメリカをはじめ、ジャガイモをよく食する国々の人々にとっては、コロラドハムシの防除は大きな問題であり、この害虫に対して殺虫剤が有効ではなくなってしまう殺虫剤抵抗性の問題は、頭の痛い問題なのだろうと思います。
