The newly hatched larvae are very small but require a substantial amount of potato leaves to grow into adults. I placed them in a plastic container measuring 17.5 x 12.5 x 6.5 cm, along with fresh potato leaves. If insufficient food is available, the larvae may resort to cannibalism. Therefore, it is crucial to provide them with ample fresh leaves. However, this did not go strictly as expected. Depending on the breeding conditions—in my case, the larvae typically became plump after 2 to 3 weeks of growth. At this stage, I transferred them to a larger plastic container (32.5 x 26.5 x 11.0 cm) along with fresh potato leaves for pupation and emergence. Since Colorado potato beetles often burrow into soil to pupate, I added soil to the container. If the soil sufficiently retains air and a certain level of moisture, it becomes soft and easy for Colorado potato beetles to burrow into. To achieve this, I stirred the soil thoroughly with my hands while adding moisture. This is an area that, in my opinion, requires adjustment through experience. In this state, the adult insects emerged after a few days to a week. I checked the plastic containers daily to monitor for any emerging adults. When I found any, I determined their sex under a stereomicroscope and separated the males and females into different containers until they were needed for experiments or other purposes.

孵ったばかりの幼虫はとても小さいのですが、これを成虫にまで育てるためには、とても多くのジャガイモの葉が必要になります。幼虫を、17.5 × 12.5 × 6.5 cmのプラスティック容器に新鮮なジャガイモの葉とともに入れておきます。餌が足りないと共食いすることもあるので、できるだけ潤沢に新鮮な葉を与えることが望ましいとは思いますが、なかなか思うようにはいきませんでした。飼育条件にもよるとは思いますが、2〜3週間して十分に成長すると、幼虫がぷっくりとしてくるので、この状態の幼虫を、蛹化および羽化のための別の大きめのプラスティック容器（32.5 × 26.5 × 11.0 cm）に、ジャガイモの葉とともに移します。コロラドハムシは土の中に潜り込んで蛹になることが多いので、このプラスティック容器には土壌を入れておきました。ある程度水分を含ませつつも十分に空気を含ませておくと、とても柔らかい、コロラドハムシにとって潜りやすい土になるので、土を手でよく攪拌しながら水分を含ませていきました。ここらへんは、経験しながら調整していかなければならない領域になると思います。このような状態で、数日から一週間ほどすると、成虫が羽化してきます。成虫が羽化してきているか、毎日プラスティック容器を確認しながら、もし成虫が出てきているようであれば、実体顕微鏡の下で性別を確認し、実験などで必要になるまで雄雌別々の容器で維持しておきました。
