In this way, it took approximately one month from egg collection to obtaining adult beetles under my experimental conditions, depending on the breeding setup. Needless to say, obtaining just one adult beetle is insufficient. Since several dozen individuals were needed for each replication of the bioassays, and populations also had to be selected for the next generation, obtaining sufficient numbers of individuals for even a single generation required an enormous amount of fresh potato leaves and, above all, extensive labor. To obtain all the individuals necessary for the insecticide bioassays and the creation of the next generation, I believe it would have taken about three months even under ideal, problem-free circumstances. In reality, various issues arose, significantly extending the timeline. As a result, my graduation was delayed, and I ended up staying in Delaware for over two years.

このように、採卵してから成虫を得るまでに、もちろん飼育条件にもよるとは思いますが、私の実験条件ではだいたい1ヶ月くらいかかりました。もちろん、１匹だけ得られれば良いというわけではありません。殺虫試験のためには１回の反復で数十の個体が必要ですし、さらに次世代のために集団を選択しなければならなかったりするわけですから、1世代でさえも必要な個体数を得るためには途方もないくらいの新鮮なジャガイモ葉が必要になりますし、何よりも莫大な労力が必要になります。殺虫試験や次世代を築くために必要な個体数を全て得るためには、何もトラブルがない理想的な状態であったとしても3ヶ月ぐらいは必要だったと思います。実際には、様々なトラブルがあり、もっと多くの時間が必要でした。私の修了が延び延びになってしまい、デラウェアに2年以上も滞在することになってしまったのも、このためです。
