Graduating from my master’s program at the University of Delaware
This may sound like I am speaking indirectly or holding something back, but according to my transcript, I enrolled in the master's program at the University of Delaware in the fall semester of 1994 and graduated in the spring semester of 1997. Thus, on paper, I was enrolled in graduate school there for three years. As I will explain later, after completing my studies at the University of Delaware, I returned to Japan and entered the doctoral program at the University of Tsukuba. I enrolled in graduate school at the University of Tsukuba in April 1997, but my master's degree certificate from the University of Delaware is dated May 31, 1997. As a result, my resume shows that I graduated from the University of Delaware after enrolling at the University of Tsukuba. Whenever I submitted my resume for a job or part-time position, I was asked if this was an error and had to explain the situation. In Japan, most schools start in April. In contrast, most schools in the United States start in the fall, although some students enroll in the spring, making the semester schedule seem quite flexible to me. I believe this flexibility reflects differences between the American and Japanese education systems, particularly their semester structures. However, I would like to explain in more detail how my situation arose.

デラウェア大学修士課程修了
いやらしい言い方ですが、私自身の成績証明書によれば、私は1994年の秋学期からデラウェア大学の修士課程に在籍し、修了したのは1997年の春学期となっています。なので、記録上は3年間デラウェア大学の大学院に在籍していたことになります。あとで述べますように、私は、デラウェア大学での研究を終えた後、日本に帰国し、筑波大学の博士課程に進学しました。筑波大学大学院の入学が1997年4月なのですが、デラウェア大学から修士課程の修了証が発行されたのは、記録上は1997年の5月31日になります。つまり、履歴書に記入するうえでは、筑波大学に4月に入学したあとに、デラウェア大学を修了することになってしまうので、就職活動やバイトの面接の際に履歴書を提出するたびに、ここはおかしいのではないかと突っ込まれ、説明をしなければなりませんでした。日本の場合には、ほとんどの学校が4月から始まりますが、一方アメリカの場合には、秋から始まることが多いとは思いますが、春から入学してくる学生もいないことはないので、学期については、かなりフレキシブルな印象があります。アメリカと日本の教育システム、特に学期制の違いによるものなのだろうと思いますが、なぜこのようなことが起こってしまうのかについて、ここで少し詳しく説明しておきたいと思います。
