The master's program in Entomology at the University of Delaware is typically completed in two years. However, I stayed for three years, one year longer than usual. In my first semester, I was a privately funded international student, but for the remaining two years, I secured an assistantship, which provided a full tuition waiver and a monthly stipend. Since I had already held my assistantship for more than two years, it was terminated in my final semester. Instead of paying the full tuition, I paid a few hundred dollars to remain enrolled under “master status sustaining.” This designation allowed me to complete the remaining requirements for graduation. I believe the system called “master status sustaining” is likely unfamiliar in Japan, so a brief explanation may be necessary.

デラウェア大学の昆虫学科の修士課程は、一般的には2年間で修了する課程です。私はそこに、通常よりも1年間長く、3年間在籍したことになります。最初のセメスターは私費留学生としてでしたが、あとの2年間はアシスタントシップをとり、授業料全額免除で、さらに毎月給付を受けていました。最後のセメスターは2年以上ということで、アシスタントシップも打ち切られてしまったので、高い授業料を納めるかわりに、マスター・ステイタス・サステイニングといって、数万円支払って大学院に籍だけ置いておいて、大学院を修了するのに必要な要件を満たす期間としていました。このマスター・ステイタス・サステイニングというシステムは、恐らく日本には馴染みがない制度だと思うので、ここのところは少し説明が必要なのだろうと思います。
