To earn a master's degree from the University of Delaware, students were required not only to complete the necessary course credits but also to fulfill additional requirements. These included submitting a master's thesis, presenting and defending it (responding to questions and answering), passing an oral exam, and successfully completing an insect identification test. I mentioned earlier that I was enrolled at the University of Delaware for three years on paper. However, I had completed all the required course credits within the first year and a half (three semesters). After that, I focused on conducting experiments and writing my master's thesis. Although most students typically complete their degree in two years, my completion was delayed due to challenges I faced with the experiments for my thesis. After my assistantship ended at the two-year mark, as the program typically lasts two years, I used the master status sustaining system, paying several hundred dollars to remain enrolled in graduate school. During that time, I completed my master's thesis, and once I submitted it, all the graduation requirements were fulfilled. With nothing else left to do, I believe I returned to Japan in late March to attend the entrance ceremony for the graduate school at the University of Tsukuba. In other words, I fulfilled all the graduation requirements while still enrolled in graduate school through the master status sustaining system and then returned to Japan. I had always admired the graduation ceremonies of American universities and graduate schools, where graduates wear gowns and distinctive caps, and the tradition of tossing their caps into the air at the end of the ceremony creates a very moving scene. I truly wished to attend, but I had already returned to Japan to begin my doctoral research at the University of Tsukuba, so unfortunately, I could not participate. My advisor at the University of Delaware later mailed me my graduate certificate.

デラウェア大学で修士号を取得するためには、必要とされる授業の単位数を満たすことのほかに、さらに修士論文を提出すること、修士論文を発表しディフェンスする（質疑応答に応える）こと、口頭（オーラル）試験に合格すること、昆虫同定試験にパスすること、などの要件をクリアしなければなりませんでした。私はデラウェア大学に記録上は3年間在籍していたと上で述べましたが、まず必要とされていた授業の単位数は、最初の1年半（3学期分）ですべて取ってしまっており、あとは修士論文のための実験をしたり修士論文をまとめたりしていました。通常は2年間で修了するところを、私は修士論文のための実験で苦労してしまったので、修了が延び延びになっていました。通常は2年間の課程なので、アシスタントシップも2年間で打ち切られてしまったあとは、マスター・ステイタス・サステイニングを使って、数万円を支払って大学院に籍だけ置かせてもらいました。その間に修士論文を完成させ、修士論文を提出した時点で、すべての修了要件が満たされることになり、あとは何もやることがなくなってしまうわけです。なので、筑波大学の大学院の入学式に間に合うように、3月下旬に日本に帰国したのではなかったかと思います。つまり、大学院に籍だけ置かせてもらっていた間に、すべての修了要件を終わらせて日本に帰国したのでした。アメリカの大学や大学院の卒業式や修了式は、卒業生はみんなマントを羽織り、独特の帽子をかぶって、式の最後にみんなで帽子を放り投げるといったような、とても感動的な印象があったので、私自身とても憧れており、ぜひ出席したかったのですが、すでに日本に帰国し、筑波大学での研究が始まってしまっていたので、残念ではありましたが、出席することはできませんでした。修了証は、デラウェア大学の指導教官に郵送してもらいました。
