In the United States, graduate schools accommodate not only full-time students but also many individuals who study while working. For those who are busy with work and have limited time to study, it is common to use the system called the master status sustaining to remain enrolled in graduate school. This allows them to work on their master's thesis or complete other graduation requirements, such as insect identification exams, when their schedule permits. In Japan, the number of people attending graduate school while working appears to be increasing. However, I think it is quite challenging to balance studying with a full-time job. I often feel that the Japanese educational system, including the semester structure, could be more flexible—similar to American universities—better accommodating students' needs.

アメリカの大学院には、純粋な学生ばかりではなく、企業で働きながら大学院で学んでいる人も少なくありません。仕事が忙しくて、学業に打ち込む時間をなかなか取れないときなどには、マスター・ステイタス・サステイニングという制度を使って大学院に籍だけ置いておいて、時間的な余裕があるときに修士論文をまとめたり、昆虫同定試験のような大学院修了のための必要要件を満たしていったりするということが、一般的に行われているようです。日本でも、社会人として働きながら大学院に通っている人が増えてきているようですが、働きながら勉強することは、なかなか困難なことだろうと思います。学期制のことなども含めて、日本の学校制度も学生の立場に立って、アメリカの大学のようにもう少しフレキシブルになれないものかといつも思ってしまいます。
