I came to America to conduct research. However, before I could focus on that, I had to adapt to living in the U.S., which is a car-oriented society. For someone like me who could not drive, living without a car—and simply getting through daily life—was quite challenging. It may seem obvious, but studying abroad is not just about conducting research and studying. My time in Delaware taught me how challenging it can be to balance both while living abroad. However, even now, I still have no desire to drive a car and continue to live without one. In a way, perhaps living without a car was something akin to a religious belief.

私は、研究するためにアメリカに渡って来ました。でも、研究する以前に、アメリカで生活しなければならず、アメリカは車社会なので、車を運転することができなかった自分にとっては、車なしで生活すること、生きていくこと自体が大変だったといえるのではないかと思います。当たり前のことなのですが、やっぱり、留学とはいっても、研究や勉強だけやっていればいいというものでは決してないのだろうと思います。海外で研究すること、勉強することの難しさを思い知ったデラウェアでの留学生活でした。もっとも、現在に至ってもなお、私は車を運転したいと思うことはなく、車なしで生活しているので、車の運転については、恐らく宗教的な信念にも似たものだったのかもしれません。
