Disposing of the flies that I had raised
I returned to Japan from Taiwan in late July 2008. Before that, I had temporarily raised fruit flies at my parents' house, facing many difficulties, as mentioned in the chapter about my research in Taiwan. I had only intended this to last a few weeks before heading to Germany for my research. In the end, because I was unable to secure the fellowship, I had to raise the fruit flies in the scorching midsummer heat with the air conditioner on full blast. This kept me constantly worried and was, frankly, exceedingly difficult. Therefore, knowing that I would not be able to raise fruit flies at my parents' house again after returning from Taiwan, I asked and was granted permission to keep the flies in the laboratory in Tsukuba for a while—on the condition that I would secure another affiliation by April of the following year. I believe I asked my graduate school advisor to arrange this, but the laboratory where I worked as a part-time researcher allowed me to use their incubators and provided me with food and other supplies for the flies.

これまで維持してきたハエを処分
台湾から2008年7月の下旬に帰国してきました。台湾に渡る前に、実家でショウジョウバエを飼うことになってしまい、とても苦労してしまったことについては、台湾での研究のところで述べましたが、あくまでも研究のためにドイツに渡るまでの数週間だけの、ほんの一時的な処置というつもりでした。結局、フェローシップを取ることができなかったために、真夏の厳しい暑さの中で、冷房をガンガンにきかせながら飼うことになってしまい、とても苦労しましたし、気が休まることがなく、正直大変でした。なので、台湾から帰国して、また実家でショウジョウバエを飼うわけにもいかなかったので、次の年の4月までに何とか次の所属先をみつけるからという条件で、また筑波でしばらくショウジョウバエを飼わせてもらうことになりました。大学院のときの指導教官に動いてもらったのではなかったかと思いますが、非常勤の研究員としてお世話になっていた研究室で、インキュベーター（恒温器）を使わせていただき、餌などをわけていただくことになりました。
