Email correspondence
I still have the emails we exchanged at that time. According to them, I sent my first email to the author of the paper on November 29, 2016. Someone I did not know criticized my research without my knowledge and published their critique in a paper. I am not sure how other researchers would react, but personally, I found the authors of that paper to be very rude and unfair to me. Therefore, as a courtesy, I asked the author of that paper to send me a PDF of it, intending to refute the criticism. I felt it was only polite to introduce myself before engaging in a debate. It may seem a bit old-fashioned, like Bushido or chivalry, but I believed that following the proper steps and leaving evidence of my actions was an ironclad rule to protect myself—so I did just that. Below, I will include the email I sent to them at that time. My purpose is to explain how I responded to their criticism. While this may not hold much significance—since they published a paper criticizing the research of many people, including my own—I have made some necessary edits to protect personal information.
Dear Dr. Lawo:
I am Takahiro Miyo, and I recently found your paper concerning intrinsic rates of increase. I would appreciate it very much if you could send me a PDF of your paper "Misconceptions about the comparison of intrinsic rates of natural increase" published in the Journal of Applied Entomology (2011), because this journal is not available in the libraries around me. Thank you very much for your kindness.

まだその時にやり取りしたメールが保存されています。それによれば、私がその論文の著者に最初のメールを送ったのは、2016年11月29日となっていました。私が行った研究に対して、私の知らない人が、私の知らないところで批判し、それを論文の中で発表していたわけですから、他の研究者はどのように反応するものなのか、私の知るところではありませんが、しかし私の場合は、この論文の著者に対して、とても失礼というか、フェアーではないと正直思いました。なので、私は一応礼儀として、相手にこの論文のPDFを送ってもらうように要請して、そのうえで批判に対して反論していこうと思いました。まあ、戦いを始める前に、相手に対して一応自分の名前を名乗るのは、相手に対する礼儀だと思いましたし、武士道や騎士道のように、少し古風かもしれないのですが、一応手順を踏みつつも、その手順を踏んだという証拠を残しておくことは、自分の身を守る鉄則だと思ったので、そのようにしました。その時に私が相手に送ったメールを以下に掲げておきたいと思います。彼らの批判に対して私がどのように応答してきたかを述べることがここでの目的なので、まあ、私の研究を含む多くの人たちの研究を批判する論文を相手は発表しているわけですから意味はあまりないのかもしれませんが、個人情報の保護の観点から、一応必要と思われるところには修正を加えておきました。
