Since I was being criticized and had nothing to lose—truly nothing at all—I thought I might as well go all the way. When I did not receive a response from him, I even tried to get the editor of the journal that published the paper to take action. At this time, I emailed the editor-in-chief of the entomology journal that had published the paper, asking if I could submit a rebuttal letter addressing the criticism of my research made in the paper five years earlier. It may have been possible to submit a rebuttal letter to the paper that had been published five years earlier, but the journal editor stated that they would not accept a rebuttal unless it included the critic's arguments. When I pointed out that I had not heard from them for more than six months and that I was unable to contact the critic in question, he firmly stated that submitting a rebuttal letter was not an option. 幸運にも、上記のメールに対してすぐに返事をくれて、しかもPDFまで添付してくれていました。もうすでにその論文には目を通していたので、返事のメールをもらってすぐに、私の研究に対する批判への反論を、まあ、かなり大まかにではありましたが、比較的長文のメールにまとめて送りました。しかしその後、半年くらい音沙汰がありませんでした。まあ、相手にしてみれば、面倒な奴にからまれたなあと思ったのかもしれませんが、やはりこういうときには、できるだけ速やかに対応するのは鉄則だろうと思います。なぜならば、こちらもあの手この手を考えて相手と議論してやろうとしているわけですから、彼らを議論の場に引きずり出そうとして、いろいろな手立てを考えることになってしまうので、かえって話がこじれてしまうためです。こちらとしては、批判されている以上、もう失うものは何もないつもりでしたし、実際何もなかったので、まあ、やれるとこまでやってやろうと思っていました。実際、相手からの返事がなかったので、その論文が発表されていた雑誌の編集者を動かそうとしました。その論文が出された昆虫学系の雑誌の編集長にメールを送り、5年前に発表された論文の中で、私の研究が批判されていたことについて、反論レターを出したいが、そのようなことは可能であるか問い合わせたことがあります。発表されてからすでに5年も経過してしまった論文に対する反論レターも、あるいは可能だったのかもしれないのですが、まあ、雑誌の編集者としては、ただの反論レターだけでなく、批判者の主張も一緒でないと受け付けられないということで、まあ突っ撥ねられてしまいました。半年以上相手からは音沙汰がなく、当の批判者が捕まらないと訴えたところ、では反論レターを出せる可能性はまったくないと断言されてしまうことになりました。とても悔しかったのですが、その雑誌の編集長に対して、それ以上どうすることもできなかったので、まあ、他の手立てを考えていくことになるわけです。生態学系の雑誌に、よその雑誌に掲載された論文の反論レターを提出しようとして、その雑誌の編集長に相談したこともあります。こうやって、お互いにどんどんと引くに引けない状況が作られていくことになるわけです。まあ、彼らの論文の中で、結構辛辣に批判されていたので、恐らくなあなあでは済まなかったとは思いますが、すぐに返事をくれなかったので、かえってややこしいことになってしまったように思います。
