In the end, when I considered their insistence that the intrinsic rate of increase must be measured at the population level, I felt they did not understand our interest in how natural selection, acting during population growth, influences genetic composition. They insist on comparing the intrinsic rates of natural increase between populations without considering the effects of density dependence, genetic composition, and other factors. I do not think they are interested at all in changes to the population’s genetic makeup. In other words, they overlooked the key selling point of my research, leading me to believe they were uninterested in our work and that further discussion was pointless. These points were addressed in my papers, so I suspect they criticized my work without reading it. Therefore, I decided to end the email exchange and, with their consent, write a slightly longer rebuttal paper, leaving it to the readers to evaluate. Before submitting the paper, I asked them to review the manuscript and provide comments. Of course, I had no intention of using their feedback, as they likely had not even read the paper, but I requested their input as a courtesy.

結局、内的自然増加率を集団全体の値として測定しなければならないという彼らの主張を吟味してみると、集団が増大していく過程ではたらいている自然選択の作用が、集団の遺伝的な構成にどのように影響を与えるかという私たちの興味を理解してくれていないと感じました。彼らは、ただ、密度依存的な影響ですとか、集団内の遺伝的な構成のことなどを顧みることなく、集団の間で内的自然増加率を比較することこそが必要であると主張しているように思います。彼らには、集団の遺伝的な構成の変化などは、まったく眼中にないのだろうと思いました。つまり、私たちの研究のもっとも“売り”としているところを見てくれていないのですから、要は、彼らは私たちの研究に興味がないのでしょうし、議論の余地はないのだろうと思いました。これらのことは、論文の中で議論されていることなので、恐らく彼らは、本文を読むことなく批判していたのではないかと思います。なので、一応、彼らとのメールでのやり取りはここまでとし、彼らの同意を得たうえで、ちょっと長めの反論ペーパーを書くことにして、評価を読者に委ねることにしました。投稿する前に、彼らにも原稿に目を通してもらい、一応コメントをもらっています。もちろん、論文を読んでくれてなどいないのでしょうから、コメントを採用するつもりはまったくありませんでしたが、一応礼儀としてコメントを求めました。
